Widespread Sense

Widespread Sense is the timeless traditional that impressed the 13 Colonies to battle for and declare their independence from Nice Britain in the summertime of 1776. Written by famed political theorist Thomas Paine, this pamphlet boldly challenged the authority of the British authorities and the royal monarchy to rule over the American colonists. Through the use of plain language and a reasoned fashion, Paine selected to forego the philosophical and Latin references made standard by the Enlightenment period writers. Because of this, Paine united common residents and political leaders behind the central thought of independence and remodeled the tenor of the colonists’ argument in opposition to the British. Because the best-selling American title of all time, Widespread Sense has been eloquently described by historian Gordon S. Wooden as "essentially the most incendiary and standard pamphlet of the complete revolutionary period."

Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was an English-American political activist, thinker, and revolutionary. As one of many Founding Fathers of america, he authored essentially the most influential pamphlets initially of the American Revolution and impressed the colonists to declare independence from Nice Britain in 1776. His concepts mirrored Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights and the separation of church and state. He has been known as a corset-maker by commerce, a journalist by occupation, and a propagandist by inclination.
